Introduction
Introduced in Yu-Gi-Oh! Sevens Episode 23 was a new card mechanic called "Maximum Summon" and its associated "Maximum Mode" along with Maximum Cards which take advantage of this new mechanic. This is a new mechanic introduced for Rush Duels, however since DMG has been implementing all Rush Duel cards in to Master Duels as well, and there is a lack of Master Duel content with this anime series, we will be implementing Maximum Summons in to Master Duels as well. Mechanically there is no functional difference in how the cards and mechanic will work between the duel game modes.
The Cards
The Maximum Cards themselves come in 2 varieties, they will be dubbed "Main Maximum Cards" and "Sub Maximum Cards" for the purposes of this article.
Left: Yggdrago the Heavenly Emperor Dragon Tree [L] (A Sub Maximum Monster)
Center: Yggdrago the Heavenly Emperor Dragon Tree (A Main Maximum Monster)
Right: Yggdrago the Heavenly Emperor Dragon Tree [R] (A Sub Maximum Monster)
Pictured above are the known Maximum Monsters. "Yggdrago the Heavenly Emperor Dragon Tree" being a "Main Maximum Card" and the other 2 being "Sub Maximum Cards". Notice that the artwork of the 3 cards forms a complete picture.
Appearance-wise, all 3 cards appear as regular effect monsters with the subtype "/Maximum" (Like Toon, Gemini, etc). The Main Maximum Monster has an additional stat as well called "MAXIMUM ATK" which is displayed above the ATK/DEF values.
Maximum Summon
A Main Maximum Monster will have text on it like this...
In order to Maximum Summon cards, you must have that Main Maximum Monster in your hand as well as all Sub Maximum Monsters listed on that card as requirements.
1. A Maximum Summon is performed during your Main Phase during an Open Duel State.
2. A Maximum Summon is considered a Special Summon just like Ritual, Synchro, Fusion, etc Summons.
3. The Main Maximum Monster and all Sub Maximum Monsters are summoned simultaneously.
4. All 3 monsters are summoned to 3 adjacent zones with the Main Monster in the center and the [L] and [R] on their respective sides.
5. Any cards in the zones you are trying to summon to are sent to the graveyard.
6. A monster that is Maximum Summoned is in "Maximum Mode".
Maximum Mode
When you Maximum Summon, all monsters summoned are joined together in "Maximum Mode", (Represented in-game as the 3 cards being placed closer together and a yellow glow around them), which, in addition to being a requirement for activating certain effects, also does the following...
1. All 3 monsters summoned in Maximum Mode are considered 1 monster. This means that they only count as a single tribute for tribute and a single material for extra deck/ritual summons
2. The Maximum Mode monster's attribute, type, and level are the stats of the Main Maximum Monster, while using the MAXIMUM ATK stat as its ATK value.
3. Just like Link Monsters, a Maximum Mode monster is not considered to have a DEF while on the field and cannot be changed to Defense Position or flipped face-down.
4. Since all 3 monsters are considered 1 card, if they are removed from the field, all of the cards go to that same locations (IE, sent to graveyard, all 3 go to the graveyard. Returned to hand, all 3 return to hand). The only exception to this is Xyz Summons, the Main Monster will be used as an Xyz Material and the remaining 2 will be sent to the graveyard.
Final Note
This is still a new mechanic, please report any ruling oversights or system issues.
