Star Tournaments
What is a Star Tournament?
Star Tournaments are announced on the Duel Monsters Genesis forums (here) and are the only Tournaments in the game in which you can gain SPs. After participating you are awarded certain numbers of SP depending on where you placed (which can also mean none if you finished at the bottom). SPs [Star Points] are cumulative, and reflect your overall ranking in the game relation to other Duelists. You can check your placement on the games HUB under the Standings section.
Additionally, gaining SP also unlocks a small number of in-game features.

Spontaneous Star Tournaments
Spontaneous Star Tournaments are STs that can be hosted at any given moment in a server. What happens is that a TM will decide to host one, and then gather players from the current server to join. Typically, SSTs will begin no more than half an hour after their announcement. A forum thread will be created for the event, with entrants and pairings listed in it.
These tournaments follow the same rules and procedures as normal Star Tournaments.
Being that these types of tournaments are secondary to normal STs, we have cut the prizes for them. The following tier system will be used for Spontaneous STs:

Players, please join our tournaments. We appreciate the support you continue to give our game, and tournaments are an excellent opportunity to test your decks in a competitive situation. How you choose to compete is up to you, but tournaments have always given me some of my best experiences in this game because there is something at stake. Please know that we are doing what we can to keep rewarding players who continue to support us.
